OTHER FACTS AND STATISTICS
In 1995, 5% of women under 19 getting an abortion in Maine were getting a repeat abortion. The same was true of 10% of the 19 year olds, 27% of those 20-24, 37% of those 25-29, 40% of those 30-34, 45% of those 35-39, and 34% of those 40-44 years old.

The reasons given for getting an abortion are:


  • 75%--A baby would interfere with work, school or other responsibilities
  • 66%--Can't afford a child
  • 50%--Don't want to be a single parent or make problems in the relationship with the partner
  • 1%--Unborn child has a birth defect
  • 1%--Pregnant by rape or incest

Public Opinion
According to a CNN/TIME survey in May of 1996, only 12% of the public believes that abortion should be legal for any reason at any time during a woman's pregnancy, and 57% believe that abortion should not be legal at all or should be legal only for the life of the mother or in cases of rape or incest.

Family Planning Association of Maine receives over $1.5 million dollars a year from the state of Maine and over $1 million a year in federal funds.
